SOAP 07/26/2011; 1 Peter 5:3

Today's reading: Isaiah 46, 47, 48, 49; 1 Peter 5

S) "3 nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock."
1 Peter 5:3 (NASB)

O) This is a pretty simple instruction, but it bears repeating. Like all good things in the Bible, just because it's simple, doesn't mean it's unimportant. The concept of leading by example is important, and nowhere is that more true, than it is with the things of God. They say that you can't drive sheep, you have to lead them.

A) The most simple application of this is with my family. I can't lead them to places I've never been. The disciplines of reading the Word daily, praying throughout the day, and constant worship, these are basics that are fundamental to a fruitful life in God. I need to be sure that I am walking in those disciplines if I'm ever to hope that my wife and kids will learn the same disciplines. Ultimately, that's what I want out of life, I want to know that my wife and children, the most important people to me, are secure in the Lord.
P) Father, thank You for this good work You've started in me. I know that leading my family is only the beginning of the things You've called me to do, but I also know they are the most important. They are the foundation, because I must be able to lead my own family if I ever hope to lead anyone else, or be used in any other way. Forever, satisfy my heart by my ministry to my own family first. I pray that I am never restless or impatient to do anything greater. Remind me always, that they are the 4 most important people that I can ever teach, ever lead, ever influence. Help me bear that responsibility in joy and to never take it lightly. In Jesus' name I pray, amen.
